Argus Pheasant Print by W.T. Wood
In 2009, we purchased a copper print block from an estate sale in the Ithaca, New York area. The print block image is the Argus Pheasant sketched by the English 19th century zoological artist, T.W. Wood, while exploring what is now Indonesia. The artist’s name is seen in the left lower area of the print. This exact print first appeared in the second edition (1874) of the book: The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex by Charles Darwin.
We commissioned the Ink Shop of Ithaca, New York, to print a limited restrike edition from the original copper print block. Each is hand-printed on Japanese HM-60 Hosho natural mulberry paper. Numbered prints are mounted in acid-free cotton matboard and framed in period hand-made frames decorated with either vinegar graining or smoke graining. Each frame back is covered with a hand-chamfered pine board. An Ink Shop “certificate of authenticity” accompanies every 8” x 10” framed print. Please call for availability.
